Most Popular Roof Shingles Colors in 2027 (And How to Pick)

Roofing

Hello guys, welcome back to my blog. Today I am going to tell you about the most popular roof shingles colors. If you are planning a new roof, this is a big decision. Roof is one of the first thing people notice when they look at your house.

So I went through a lot of homeowner discussions on Reddit and also checked the color charts of big shingle brands. And honestly, the same few colors keep coming again and again. Charcoal, black, weathered wood and driftwood are on the top. But which one works best for you depends on your home exterior and your climate. So let’s check them one by one.

Here is a quick table guys, so you can see all the popular colors in one place. I made it from big brand reports and what homeowners keep saying online.

As you can see, almost all of them are neutral colors. And honestly, I am not surprised. A neutral roof is the safest bet for most houses.

1. Charcoal and Black Shingles

Charcoal is the number one roof color right now, no doubt about it. In its 2026 color report, GAF says Charcoal is far ahead of every other color and has been their top seller for years. A roofing company called Mr. Roof also checked all its 2022 installs in the Midwest. Onyx Black came on top there with 23% of roofs.

So why people love it so much? I think it is because of the contrast. A dark roof on white or light siding looks very crisp and modern. GAF also says black has been a go-to pick for years, mostly with bright white siding. Many homeowners on r/HomeMaintenance pick charcoal for this same clean look.

But honestly, black is not for every house. If your siding is also dark or the house is small, the whole thing can look heavy. GAF itself suggests Pewter Gray as a softer option when black feels too stark.

My take: If you have a white or light gray house, charcoal is a safe and stylish pick. I really like it with black windows.

2. Weathered Wood Shingles

Weathered Wood is my personal favorite in this list. It is a blend of brown and gray, so it does not look too warm or too cool. GAF calls it a national bestseller and puts it at number two for 2026.

The best thing about this color is that it goes with almost everything. GAF says it works nicely with sage, cream, ivory and beige exteriors. It also looks great on brick and stone homes. Its brown, gray and small white flecks pick up the colors of brick and mortar, so the roof does not fight with the walls.

One homeowner on r/ExteriorDesign picked Weathered Wood again when it was time to replace their roof. For them it is a classic that will not go out of fashion. And I agree, it is one of those color which never looks outdated.

My take: If you have a brick house or you are confused between brown and gray, just go with Weathered Wood. It is very hard to go wrong with it.

3. Driftwood Shingles

Driftwood is another safe and dependable neutral. Owens Corning describes its Driftwood as a medium brown made with green, gray and brown granules. So it looks softer then a deep brown roof.

In the Mr. Roof install data, Driftwood was the fourth most picked color with 11% of roofs. They say people like it because it mixes cool and warm tones, so it pairs with many paint colors.

What I like most about Driftwood is the freedom it gives you. One Redditor on r/Roofing voted for it because it matches the current house colors and will still match if they repaint later. That is a smart point, guys. A roof stays on your house for decades, but paint changes much more often.

My take: If you are planning to repaint your house in a few years, Driftwood is a very good choice.

Apart from these three, few more colors are also selling well. Pewter Gray is GAF’s number three for 2026. It is a soft gray with a small hint of blue and green, so it looks clean and modern. Barkwood is a rich earthy brown that was in GAF’s top four for 2025. I think it looks really nice on craftsman and cabin style houses.

Grays are big in the Mr. Roof data too. Sierra Gray (22%) and Estate Gray (17%) came right after Onyx Black.

Popular colors also change from region to region. GAF shared the top pick for each area in its 2025 regional report:

RegionPopular pickWhy people like it
NortheastWilliamsburg SlateLooks like an aged slate roof
SoutheastOyster GrayLighter color for year-round heat
SouthwestShakewoodWarm tan that goes with brick and adobe
CentralHunter GreenFarmhouse look with white siding
WestBirchwoodVery light, almost white, reflects sun

My take: A green roof gives a lot of character to a farmhouse. But I will only pick a bold color like this if the house style really supports it.

How to Pick the Right Shingle Color for Your Home

Now the main question, which color is best for you? Honestly guys, there is no single right answer. It depends on your house, your weather and your future plans. Here are the three things I will check.

Match the Roof to Your House, Not a Trend

When someone asks for roof color help on r/Roofing, the first reply is usually a question about how the house looks. That makes total sense. Your brick, siding, trim and house style all decide which color will look right.

GAF says the roof can be up to 40% of what people see from outside. So it is not a small thing. A simple trick from GAF is to list everything outside that will not change, like brick, stone or a chimney. Then see if those have warm or cool tones, and pick a shingle that goes with them. If you are also thinking about new siding, read my post on the benefits of siding replacement before you lock the roof color.

Think About Heat and Your Climate

This is where many people make mistake. Dark roofs get hot. As per the U.S. Department of Energy, a normal roof can reach 150°F or more on a sunny summer afternoon. A reflective roof can stay more than 50°F cooler in the same sun.

Some homeowners on r/ExteriorDesign say their summer bills went up after they switched to dark shingles. One person’s advice was simple: if your summer has several 100 degree days, go lighter. But other people in the same discussions feel the difference is small. DOE also says your savings depend on climate, insulation and your AC system, so the result is not same for everyone.

Here is the good news. You don’t always have to pick a light color. DOE says you can choose asphalt shingles with special cool-colored granules if you still want a darker shade. GAF’s reflective Timberline HDZ RS line, even in Charcoal, meets California’s Title 24 energy rules. And in cold places, DOE notes that a cool roof can raise your winter heating bill. So if you live in a snowy area, a dark roof is not a bad idea at all.

Pick a Blended Color if You May Repaint Later

Not sure about your future paint color? Then pick a shingle with a mix of browns and grays. One person on r/ExteriorDesign suggested a brown-gray blend for this exact reason. It reads more brown or more gray depending on your house color, so your options stay open. GAF also says neutral shingles let you change paint, doors or trim later without the roof clashing.

My take: If I had to choose for my own house, I would go with a blended neutral. It gives peace of mind for many years.

Things I Will Do Before Deciding

Check Real Samples and Nearby Roofs

Never pick a shingle color just from a phone screen. Shingles have a rough granule surface, so they look different in real life. GAF suggests asking your contractor for full-size sample boards and looking at them at sunrise, noon and evening. Owens Corning also says to see the color installed on a real house before you decide.

I also love this tip from r/Roofing. Drive around and look at houses similar to yours. Try to find a roof which is around 5 years old, so you can see how the color looks after some aging. When you meet roofers, my checklist on selecting the right roofing contractor will help you ask the right questions.

One more thing about aging. In warm and humid places, DOE says algae or mold stains show more on light roofs then on dark ones. So if you pick a light color there, regular care is a must. I have explained this in my roof maintenance guide.

Choose a Bold Color Only if It Suits the House

Green, blue or red-brown roofs can look amazing on the right house. But they are not for every buyer. One user on r/HomeDecorating warned that a non-neutral roof, like green or blue, can cut down the number of interested buyers. GAF also says a classic neutral appeals to the most buyers if you plan to sell.

And curb appeal really matters at selling time. GAF shares a National Association of Realtors finding that 97% of Realtors working with sellers said curb appeal is important to attract a buyer. The same logic goes for your garage door and front yard too.

My take: If this is your forever home and you love green, go for it. If you may sell in a few years, stay neutral.

FAQs

What are the most popular roof shingles colors right now?

Charcoal is the most popular, then Weathered Wood and Pewter Gray. That is the top three in GAF’s 2026 report. Driftwood and grays like Sierra Gray are also very common.

Which roof shingle color is best for a brick house?

Weathered Wood is a great pick for brick. Its brown and gray tones blend with brick and mortar, so the roof does not compete with the walls.

Do dark roof shingles make my house hotter?

They can. Dark roofs absorb more sun, and DOE says a regular roof can hit 150°F or more in summer. If you live in a hot place, look at lighter or reflective cool shingles.

Is a black roof good for resale?

Yes. Black and charcoal are neutral, so most buyers are fine with them. Bold colors like green or blue can limit the number of interested buyers.

Weathered Wood or Driftwood, which one is better?

Both are brown-gray neutrals, so both are safe. Weathered Wood from GAF works very well on brick homes. Driftwood from Owens Corning is a softer medium brown with a gray-green touch. I suggest you check samples of both on your own house.

Final Words

So these were the most popular roof shingles colors right now. Charcoal and black are on the top, followed by Weathered Wood, Driftwood and Pewter Gray. I have tried to cover how each color looks, which homes they suit and what to check before you buy.

If you ask me, pick a color based on your exterior, your climate and how long you plan to stay. Not just because it is trending. And if your old roof is already giving trouble, check these 7 signs it’s time to call a roofer.
